Chapter 11
Lesson 11: Scintillating conversation is a talent every woman should master.“T hat valise will go into the master chamber,” Victoria directed the footman who was carrying her things into one of Justin’s London abodes the next afternoon.
The young man nodded, then headed up the stairs toward the bedchambers. With a sigh, Victoria looked around her. After the simple abode in Soho Square, she couldn’t help but be impressed by this new home’s sensual opulence. It looked every inch the kind of place where a man would keep his mistress.
Her cursory inspection upon her arrival an hour ago had revealed soft, velvet upholstery on all the chairs, most of which were built for two or more. She supposed that was to make afternoon trysts in every room all the easier.
The master bedroom was even more impressive. Her coverlet was made from expensive black silk and felt like pure sin when she stroked her hand along it. Even now, she wondered what it would feel like elsewhere. Or if Justin was the one gliding it along her skin.
A servant bustled past, and Victoria shook off her thoughts with a blush.
“Victoria, you really must listen to me,” Marah said with a frown as she stepped from one of the nearby parlors.
Victoria drew a long breath before she faced her friend with a tight smile. That morning, before they departed their former home, Justin had sent a note telling Marah to pretend to be Victoria’s maid once they arrived at his estate, since the servants he had hired would know nothing of their ruse. But so far, Marah had had difficulty following his direction.
“I have been listening to you, Marah,” Victoria said on a sigh. “You gave me no choice all last night and all this morning while you railed on me about every action I have made since reuniting with Justin.”
Marah’s face twisted at her choice of words. “Is that what you think this is?”
Her friend glanced at a few servants who were carrying more items in from the other house. With a frown, she caught Victoria’s arm and dragged her into the nearest parlor, shutting the door behind them.
“Do you call this a reunion with your husband?”
Victoria shook her head at her friend’s horrified look. “You know what I was trying to say. We have met again, that is all I meant by a reunion.”
She certainly wasn’t so foolish as to think she and Justin had any kind of future together. For some inexplicable reason, he wanted her, and she certainly burned for him…at least for the moment. If that desire allowed her to continue her search for Chloe, she would take advantage.
But they had already agreed that after this was over, they would return to their “normal” lives. And “normal” meant that they would live apart.
It was better that way.
“It is more than that.” Her friend paced away in disgust. “You are back in his bed, and judging from the happy little flush to your cheeks last night after he left and the tangled appearance of your clothing, you are happy to be there.
